Curated by Caroline David, the main exhibition, organized with the theme of “Looking at the Same Water“, meets the audience between 21 March – 7 May 2023.
The main exhibition is reserved for artists under the age of 35 as part of the European Youth Year 2022. The Biennial determines the age criteria with reference to the standards of the Biennial of Young Creators from Europe and the Mediterranean (BJCEM), of which İzmir Metropolitan Municipality is a member. İzmir Mediterranean Biennial aims to open space for new forms of expression by emphasizing the “young” in the context of BJCEM standards and the European Youth Year.
The main exhibition includes the works of around 40 young artists from 22 Mediterranean countries, as well as the works of several established artists. The exhibition, which consists of a selection by Caroline David, is composed of works selected both from open call applications and via the curator’s invitation. The works of young artists are exhibited at the Atlas Pavilion, while the works of established artists are exhibited at the Pakistan Pavilion and Bıçakçı Han.
